Hello, does Dostinex taken to stop breast feeding, causes fever? thank u
Aug 6, 2014

Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
DOSTINEX (Cabergoline) is mainly used to treat disorders that result from high levels of the hormone prolactin in the blood.
Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and stimulates the production of breast milk.
DOSTINEX(Cabergoline) decreases the production of prolactin from the pituitary gland by acting on dopamine receptors found on the pituitary gland.and thus it can be used to stop the production of breast milk

Dostinex's (cabergoline) ability to cause fever is unknown, but since it acts by decreasing prolactin (the hormone produced by the pituitary gland, a pine shaped gland in the brain that regulates the function of other glands) secretion, it is probable that it affects thermoregulation and thus cause fever. But is this fever subjective or documented (measured by thermometer).? Because Dostinex can cause chills and hot flashes which may give you the impression of having fever. If it's documented fever,an infectious process must alsalso be ruled out (watch out for mastitis or breast inflammation with breast feeding, because of nipple cracks).
