This is not to say that the chest pain you are describing is definitely coming from your heart, but this is a possibility. The problem with chest pain of cardiac origin is that it can be easily mimicked by other sources of pain. These include pain from the layers of tissue that cover the lungs in case they are inflamed, or the muscles of the chest wall (the muscles in between the the bones of the rib cage) or the points where the bones of the rib cage attach to the chest bone, or even anxiety. As such, it is not easy to accurately determine the cause of the chest pain without detailed information from the patient, and a thorough physical examination.
