Good evening. My dad has a heartburn . What should we do? Thank you.

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
A heartburn can be the result of acid reflux from the stomach up the esophagus (gastroesophageal reflux of GER), and this is usually solved with simple oral anti-acids, available as over the counter medications, r it can be sometimes associated with a stomach ulcer if there associated symptoms like stomach pain, early satiety, and indigestion. BUT in people with risk factors for heart disease (like high blood pressure, or hypertension, in addition to obesity, smoking, diabetes, and elevated blood lipids), a heartburn could indicate an ongoing cardiac event, like a heart attack. If your father has any of the above mentioned risk factors, I strongly advise that he seeks medical attention as soon as possible.
