Dr. dimassi, im the depressed preg. wonan, if i am not sleeping well but eating well, taking vitamins, hormones for the baby, will depression still directly affect my baby? im feeling very down
May 14, 2013

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Poor sleep results from depression, and will lead eventually to sleep debt and exhaustion, not to mention that lack of sleep negatively affects your mood and ability to concentrate on your daily activities. As I've mentioned previously, depression may weaken the emotional bonding with the baby and you may end up with postpartum depression (depression that follows delivery). Since you're obviously feeling down I urge you to consult a psychiatrist to look into possible interventions/solutions, be it psychotherapy or antidepressants, based on the psychiatric evaluation.
