Does a tear in the muscle show in the xray?
Sep 12, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Muscle injuries are common and are usually diagnosed and treated without having to resort to imaging. Some cases, however, may necessitate imaging, in which case magnetic resonance is used, as an X-ray would not reveal muscle defects if they exist.
Muscle strains are usually due to an indirect stretch-induced injury. It affects the muscle itself or a tendon, the tough fibrous tissue that connects the muscles to the bones.
Pain and inflammation, +/- overlying skin bruising at the site of injury, are the hallmark clinical findings of muscle injury; these usually are the indicators that the doctor relies upon to make a diagnosis of muscle tear. Although clinical assessment is usually sufficient for deciding on clinical management of muscle injuries, imaging may be required in certain clinical scenarios such as a complete muscle tear.
