Aug 6, 2014
Endometrium is the lining of the uterus .Endometritis is a condition that causes inflammation of the lining of a woman’s uterus.
It can be divided into pregnancy-related endometritis and endometritis unrelated to pregnancy.
The diagnosis is usually based on clinical findings especially if during pregnancy, such as fever and lower abdominal pain ,it typically causes the following symptoms:
-abdominal swelling and tenderness
-abnormal bleeding from the vagina
-abnormal discharge from the vagina
-constipation or discomfort when having a bowel movement
-fever
-general feeling of sickness
-pain in the pelvis or lower abdominal area
Usually during pregnancy the doctor will rely on the symptoms beside some unharmfull for pregnancy tests such as :
Blood tests,a blood test to measure white blood cell (WBC) count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)—endometritis will cause elevations in WBC count and ESR
Vaginal ultrasounds
Cultures (collecting blood urine and vaginal discharge samples for testing, looking at the discharge under a microscope (wet prep)
However through the symptoms the doctor may prescribe the antibiotics needed even before blood tests and other investigations being ready if he rule out endometritis .
A pregnant women may be hospitalized if the doctor suspect endometritis ,A combination of gentamicin and clindamycin administered intravenously is the most common antibiotic treatment option. Certain other antibiotic medicines (e.g. cephalosporin and metronidazole) are also useful for fighting the inflammation. Antibiotics like tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones are not prescribed to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
The symptoms of inflammation begin to subside with 48 to 72 hours of antibiotic treatment in around 90% of the cases.
