Can I use a tampon if I am still a virgin? does it break the hymen?
Apr 4, 2013

Dr. Adnan Mroueh Obstetrics & Gynecology
Tampons may be used ,if the insertion is gentle and not forceful. Tears to the hymen may occur if insertion was forceful . The anatomy of the hymen is variable ; females with cribriform hymen cannot insert a tampon ,but if hymen is elastic and dilatable , then insertion will not be traumatic and hence lesser probability of hymenal tears .

If a gentle insertion of the tampon can be atraumatic for the hymen, you should know that once the tampon has absorbed the blood (from the period), it becomes dilated, and a tear of the hymen can happen while removing the tampon.
