Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Monophasic (one-phase) oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), like Yaz and others, contain equal amounts of synthetic estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progesterone (Drospirenone). OCPs work by stopping the ovule (egg) from fully developing each month. The most commonly used dosing schedules are monophasic. Yaz has a 28-day monophasic cycle, with 24 active (pink) and tablets and 4 inactive or inert (placebo) tablets. Taking the last 4 tablets is not required for full protection against pregnancy but they do help to replace estrogen.
The placebo pills serve as habit keeping, so that you remain used to taking a pill every day, even during the week without hormones. Skipping or omitting pills during the placebo period does not interfere with the effectiveness of the pill, provided that daily ingestion of active pills is resumed at the end of the week, i.e., once you finish the 24 pink pills, you need to schedule 4 consecutive days whereby you take nothing before starting a new batch of Yaz.
