At what age otoplasty can be performed? Any other way to stop ears from sticking out, baby is 10 months old now, he doesn't like a hat or stickers on his ears...keeps removing it

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Spliting the ear lobes to reduce or limit the extent of their protrusion is mostly effective before the age of 6 months, due to the changes that occur in the cartilage component of the ears around that age. So now that your baby is 10 months of age, using a hat or stickers is no longer helpful.
Protruding ear lobes are mainly an esthetic issue and do not affect the normal function of the ears. If you plan to correct your child's ear deformity, it is advisable to have the surgery done prior to the age of 4 years, as studies have shown that when the operation is performed prior to that age, the rate of recurrence is lowest. In any case, and when you decide to proceed with the operation, you will need to consult a pediatric ENT specialist.
