Are there girls born without hymen? And is it possible that a girl loses it without any sexual intercourse and without her knowing?
Apr 28, 2013

Dr. Judy Matta Pediatrics
The hymen is a thin tissue that partly covers the opening to the vagina. Some girls are born with imperforate hymen which means no hymenal opening is present and a membrane covers the area of the hymen. An imperforate hymen completely blocks the vaginal opening.Diagnosis is either in the newborn baby or at the time of the first period. A young woman with an imperforate hymen will not have a normal menstrual period as there is a blockage and the blood cannot come out of the vagina. This blockage may be associated with abdominal pain, back pain or difficulty with urination. This condition needs to be surgically corrected.
