Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
The most common causes of hoarseness or huskiness are acute laryngitis which usually occurs due to swelling from a common cold, upper respiratory tract viral infection, or irritation caused by excessive voice use such as screaming and yelling and shouting like the case you described .
Hoarseness is a general term which describes abnormal voice changes. When hoarse, the voice may sound breathy, raspy, strained, or there may be changes in volume (loudness) or pitch (how high or low the voice is). The changes in sound are usually due to disorders related to the vocal folds which are the sound producing parts of the voice box (larynx)
Using your voice either too much, too loudly, or improperly over extended periods of time may lead to prolonged hoarseness ,These habits can lead to vocal nodules (singers nodes), which are callous-like growths, or may lead to polyps of the vocal folds (more extensive swelling).
if this is the case and the cause then try the following :
-simply resting the voice or modifying how it is used, avoid using your voice too long or too loudly.
-Avoid smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke (passive smoking) is highly recommended .
-Drinking fluids is so helpful and fluids
-honey is a good alternative treatment it soothe the tract and avoid dryness (if not contraindicated )
-there are over the counter lozenges that can help in relieving laryngitis symptoms .
-ginger tea is also helpful (if not contraindicated )
-avoid alcohol and caffeine products they dehydrate the body and worsen the situation
-avoid spicy foods and fried food like fried potato and other
>however there are many causes for hoarseness include smoking, reflux (the voice is worse in the morning and improves during the day. These people may have a sensation of a lump in their throat, mucous sticking in their throat or an excessive desire to clear their throat.) allergies, thyroid problems, neurological disorders, trauma to the voice box and occasionally the normal menstrual cycle. Many people experience some hoarseness with advanced age.
contact and ENT doctor if the hoarseness worsen or prolonged lasts longer than 2-3 weeks or if hoarseness is associated with pain not from a cold or flu or coughing up blood or you have difficulty swallowing or a lump in the neck or complete loss or severe change in voice lasting longer than a few days,he will examine your vocal cord and larynx ,diagnose the case gives the suitable treatment depending on severity and cause .
