Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Depression during pregnancy can cause the mother to neglect herself in terms of eating and sleeping properly and seeing her doctor regularly, which will therefore affect the baby. Depression may also interfere with the emotional bonding between mother and child, and predisposes to postpartum depression as well. If you feel overwhelmed, make sure you discuss your concerns with your doctor. Talk to your partner, family and friends. Yoga classes are of great benefit too. If all these don't help, you are advised to consult a psychiatrist to avoid the above-mentioned problems and avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms (such as smoking or alcohol).
Anti-depressants are prescribed judiciously and only by a psychiatrist after full evaluation and on a case-based assessment. To keep in mind, some antidepressants are associated with harmful effects on the baby, which again underlines the importance of consulting and following-up with a psychiatrist.
